A major synthetic rubber manufacturing facility operated by Tatneft in Togliatti, Russia, was reportedly targeted in an attack on 12 September, according to Ukraine's armed forces. European Rubber Journal reported that the facility subsequently experienced a fire. The plant produces several important elastomers and feedstocks, including styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), butyl rubber, isoprene rubber and butadiene.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of global synthetic-rubber supply chains to geopolitical disruptions. SBR, butyl and isoprene rubber are used across tyre and non-tyre applications, including industrial components, seals, hoses, footwear and specialised rubber products.

For downstream manufacturers, particularly smaller processors dependent on imported grades, unexpected interruptions at major production centres can affect availability, lead times and procurement costs. The incident also underlines the importance of diversified sourcing and inventory planning. While the longer-term impact on global supply remains uncertain, developments involving major elastomer-producing facilities are likely to remain an important factor for international rubber buyers.
