India steps up engagement with exporters ahead of US trade discussions

India's Commerce Ministry has intensified consultations with exporters and industry representatives ahead of Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal's US engagement. The discussions are focusing on market-access challenges, declining order volumes from American buyers and new scrutiny by US Customs. The government has also asked exporters to identify Indian products that are not sufficiently produced in the US but have established demand there, potentially creating opportunities for improved market access.

The development has direct implications for India's non-tyre rubber exporters. Technical rubber products, industrial components, moulded products, hoses, seals, gaskets and rubber-based engineering goods are among the categories where smaller Indian manufacturers depend heavily on overseas markets.

For MSME exporters, the US market remains attractive but increasingly complicated because of tariffs, customs compliance, origin requirements and supply chain scrutiny. The government-industry dialogue could help identify product categories where India has a competitive advantage and where tariff or non-tariff barriers can be addressed through negotiations.

For the rubber sector, improved access would be particularly valuable for companies seeking to diversify beyond traditional markets. It could also encourage Indian manufacturers to invest in higher value technical rubber products rather than competing primarily on price.
