India-UK trade agreement offers new opportunities for manufacturing and exports

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) came into effect on 15 July 2026, providing wider market access for goods, services, digital trade and government procurement. The agreement eliminates tariffs on nearly all Indian exports to the UK while also introducing provisions covering services, labour mobility, innovation, and professional qualifications. The accompanying Double Contribution Convention (DCC) will reduce the social security burden on Indian professionals working temporarily in the UK.
Although experts view the agreement as a significant milestone for India's trade strategy, they also note that certain issues such as investment protection, CBAM-related concerns and dispute resolution remain outside its scope. Nevertheless, the agreement is expected to strengthen India's manufacturing competitiveness, improve export opportunities, and support sectors including automotive components, rubber products and engineering goods.
