India strengthens support for exporters amid West Asia turmoil, launches strategic relief measures

India's export sector is facing one of its most challenging periods in recent years as geopolitical tensions in West Asia have triggered a sharp decline in outbound trade. In response, the government has rolled out a series of targeted interventions and is urging exporters not to retreat from the region but instead to capitalize on an enhanced support framework.

The ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has dramatically shifted the trading landscape for Indian exporters. According to data attributed to the Ministry of Commerce, exports to West Asia have fallen by nearly 58 percent year-on-year, dropping to 2.5 billion dollars. This disruption has not only affected large export houses but has also put significant pressure on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that rely heavily on regional demand for their products.

To cushion the blow, the government has operationalized the Resilience & Logistics Intervention for Export Facilitation (RELIEF) scheme, with a financial outlay of 497 crore rupees. The initiative, introduced in March, aims to address credit risks, higher freight, and insurance costs faced by exporters. A notable aspect of the scheme is its focus on micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) exporters. The Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC), which is implementing the scheme, has already received hundreds of claims for reimbursement of increased freight and insurance expenses incurred between mid-February and mid-March. Of these, a number have been processed and approved, signaling quick action to provide liquidity support. The government's decision to enhance insurance cover to 100 percent for goods shipped out during the most volatile weeks further underscores its commitment to protecting exporters from payment defaults arising from war risks.
