Remembering Vikram Makar (1963 - 2025): An Eminent, An Exceptional Icon, A Complex and Inspirational Leader

"Some leaders build companies, a rare few build legacies. Mr. Vikram Makar did both - with vision in his mind, integrity in his heart, and humility in his soul".

Mr. Vikram Makar, Former President, AIRIA and Managing Director, Oriental Rubber Industries Pvt. Ltd. left us on the 5th of July, 2025. A third generation entrepreneur, technocrat, and visionary leader, his passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the rubber industry. Mr. Makar began his career as Technical Director at Oriental Rubber Industries and rose to become the force behind its transformation into a globally recognized Indian multinational in conveyor belts. Armed with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Rubber Technology from the UK, he also trained in Germany with world-renowned companies like Siempelkamp and Buzuluk, which shaped his exceptional technical prowess and global outlook. With over three decades of experience, his leadership steered Oriental Rubber to remarkable success, driven by his belief in long term partnerships, trust, and innovation. Under his direction, the company not only expanded its global footprint but also embodied the "Make in India for the world" vision with great pride. He served AIRIA with distinction, being elected as its President twice.

He elevated the association's stature nationally and internationally and played a pivotal role in the resounding success of India Rubber Expo 2019. His contributions extended to institutions like IRMRI, Thane and RCPSDC, New Delhi, where he shaped educational and technical reforms. Known for his calm demeanor, sharp intellect, and inclusive leadership, he mentored many and inspired countless others. He built high performing teams, innovation, and always led by example, with a rare combination of vision and humility. Beyond the boardroom, he was a family man who believed in balance, enjoyed travel, and found joy in life's simple pleasures. His warmth, wisdom, and generosity will be deeply missed by colleagues, peers, and the entire rubber fraternity.

Mr. Vikram Makar's legacy will continue to guide and inspire. As we bid farewell to this towering figure of our industry, we remember a life well lived - in service of progress, innovation, and collective growth.
